(October
31, 2012 - Vienna, VA) Ringling
Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® is
sad to announce the passing of Sid, a 45 year-old female Asian elephant. Sid
was one of the first elephants to reside at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum &
Bailey Center for Elephant Conservation® in
central Florida, where she was part of our breeding program, and is the mother
of Bonnie and grandmother of Barack. Sid was cared for by dedicated members of
the Ringling Bros. animal care and veterinary team.
Unfortunately, Ringling Bros. veterinary staff recently concluded
that euthanasia was appropriate due to Sid’s declining health. As a courtesy,
the relevant federal agency was contacted.
She
performed with both the Blue unit and was featured at Circus World, but had
been a part of the herd in Florida since the opening of the Center for Elephant Conservation in 1995.
Sid was a beloved member of our Ringling
Bros. animal family and will be missed.
